Some weddings are about the big party—Kayleen and Lexi’s was about them. Last September, on a quiet Friday afternoon, they eloped at City Hall, keeping the day simple, intentional, and entirely theirs.
With no guests, I had the honor of signing their marriage license as their witness! We started with portraits around City Hall, soaking in the moment before heading outside to Niagara Square for their ceremony. With just the city around them, they exchanged vows—no distractions, no expectations, just the two of them making it official!

Afterward, we wandered through Niagara Square, capturing the first moments of married life. The joy, the relief, the quiet excitement—it was all there. Wanting to include a place that meant something to them, we ended the day at Outer Harbor, their favorite spot to walk together. With the lake breeze and fading sunlight, they had a moment to just be, letting it all sink in.
Their elopement was a reminder that weddings don’t have to be big to be meaningful. It’s about doing what feels right, and for Kayleen and Lexi, that meant a Friday in September, a quiet ceremony, and a walk by the water—exactly their style.
Tips for Eloping at Buffalo City Hall:
- Marriage License – A marriage license is valid for 60 calendar days, beginning the day after it is issued, Buffalo City Hall issues them Monday through Friday, so plan accordingly. There is a $40 fee, fill the application out here: New York Marriage License Application
- Ceremony Location – You can have a quick civil ceremony inside City Hall or step outside to Niagara Square for a more open, scenic backdrop. It is currently $100 the day of the wedding.
- Witness Requirements – You’ll need at least one witness to sign your license. If you’re eloping just the two of you, your photographer (like me!) can step in.
- Best Time for Photos – Weekdays, especially mornings or late afternoons, are ideal for fewer crowds and better lighting around City Hall and Niagara Square. City Hall closes at 4:30pm Monday-Friday so make sure you take photos inside before they close!
- Where to Celebrate After – Whether it’s a walk through Outer Harbor, a cozy dinner at your favorite restaurant, or a low-key night at home, plan something that feels right for you.
Eloping at City Hall is perfect for couples who want to keep it simple, stress-free, and focused on what truly matters—each other.
